While my wife (INFP) and I (INFJ) were dating, we discovered the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator through a wonderful book called Do What you Are by Paul Tieger and Barbara Barron-Tieger. We were both soul-searching for careers that would suit us. Discovering our types was not only extremely freeing and empowering, but it also helped us in our relationship and continues to help us to this day.
Its a great book. Love the title Do What You Are.

I think when a person is close to the middle on the dichotomies, it makes it harder to determine the preference. I’m a huge I, F, and J. Closer to the middle between N and S. I took the assessment through a book with lots of information and had someone who knew me well to talk it over with. I have never taken an online test, but suspect they might not be as thorough. Of course, it’s probably best to take the assessment with an MBTI Counselor. Thank you for stopping by and taking a look. I appreciate that!

I really do think MBTI is probably the most helpful of all the different personality typologies, especially in terms of relationship compatibility. When I finally landed myself another NF everything finally clicked and stopped being so hard. 🙂

Yeah, you know, I couldn’t imagine being with someone who wasn’t an NF. Thanks for your comment.

Do What You Are is where I discovered my type, too. I tell my students about it all the time, although I suspect they (like me) put off looking at it for years and years. It’s a great book indeed. Love this cartoon!

No way! That book changed our lives. They have another one called Just Your Type about relationships between types. Very helpful too.

Does it cover all possible relationship combinations? Or just the NF – NF, SF – SF, etc? For instance, I’m married to an ISFP.

I don’t know. I think it would be helpful no matter what type you are or your partner is.

I am having this exact problem right now. I actually had my psychiatrist agree that I needed a break from this horrid environment that I work in right now so she sent them a letter stating that I needed a two week leave of absence. It is an unpaid leave but I just can’t do it anymore. I’ve been doing the same thing over and over for years and years and I am just not going to do it anymore. I am pretty much thinking that this job is over for me. Thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster that I found your blog tonight and the name of a book that can help me find another job! I have been struggling with finding a job that I can handle for a very, very, very, very, very, very, (you get my point) very long time now. I ordered this book online to be shipped to me immediately even before I typed this comment. Thanks so much for posting all this great information! I really appreciate it.

We do not choose to be born the way we are. With the personalities and temperaments we have (with creative bent) how can we even hope to live a “normal/conventional” life? I hope the book helps in some way. It may not lead you to a job as a ___ or a ____, but it will give you ideas to think about and encouragement.
